Neart le Chéile
At Phoenix RC we welcome adult beginners and returning rowers. Rowing is mostly in quads with access to double and single sculls. Members new to rowing will be offered an introductory course for beginners.
Age is not a barrier at Phoenix RC and members range in age from their ’20s to 70’s.
Year on year since its foundation, Phoenix RC has increased its membership and through its various activities has built relationships with rowing clubs across Ireland and in Europe. Club activities include participating in regattas, home and away, and tour rowing. Tour rowing is a significant aspect of Phoenix activity and our members have traveled extensively in Ireland and in Europe. We also engage in fundraising rowing activities for charity.
Phoenix RC is affiliated with Rowing Ireland (RI) and contributes to the RI Recreational Committee which aims to promote and develop recreational rowing in Ireland.
Our History
The story of Phoenix Rowing Club begins in the autumn of 2010 when an invitation issued from Dublin Municipal Rowing Centre (DMRC) Secretary, to staff of Dublin City Council (DCC) to attend a meeting at the Centre with a view to setting up a recreational rowing club. DMRC works with schools, adult and community groups and had already been involved in organising summer rowing camps for DCC staff. The invitation to support the establishment of a recreational rowing club was also in line with the DMRC mission statement which aims “to make rowing accessible anyone interested in participation at any level.”
From this initial meeting, a small group of dedicated activists and rowing enthusiasts worked with the equally dedicated support of DMRC Secretary to establish Phoenix Rowing Club. Within three months they had established a working Committee, received support from the Amateur Rowing Union of Ireland (the precursor of Rowing Ireland), and had members out rowing regularly. The acceptance of the Phoenix RC Constitution at the first AGM, with inclusivity and diversity at its core, established Phoenix RC as an independent entity. The mutual cooperation and support between Phoenix RC and DMRC remain key to its success.
Since its establishment, there has been a rapid growth in membership which expanded beyond DCC staff to include people from all backgrounds and walks of life. A well-organised coaching program has enabled a significant number of beginners to become confident, fit rowers.
In 2014 Phoenix members completed the very challenging Traversee de Paris along with recreational rowers from across Europe. A significant achievement for such a young club and the first of many wonderful trips at home and abroad.
